The AI race is getting more expensive, more aggressive, and more dependent on locking customers in.
Anthropic is heading toward an IPO with huge headline losses but improving operating economics. Meta is reportedly raising $95B to keep funding infrastructure. OpenAI is cutting prices hard to win enterprise customers from Anthropic. And Microsoft is offering buyouts to tens of thousands of employees while still planning massive AI capital spending.
At the same time, smaller venture funds are leaning into narrow founder pipelines across AI, urbantech, forestry, and industrial systems.
Five signals worth watching today:
Anthropic is preparing for a potential $1.5T IPO.
Meta is reportedly seeking $95B to finance its AI expansion.
OpenAI is offering steep discounts to win Anthropic customers.
Microsoft is offering buyouts to around 60,000 employees while ramping AI spending.
Smaller funds are concentrating on highly specific founder ecosystems.

📍 Funding Signal
Healthcare and biotechnology dominated the largest checks today.
Pathos AI, Star Therapeutics, Hexagon Bio, adsilico, Kivo Health, DropGenie, and Connected Health Development all sit somewhere in the healthcare or life sciences stack. More importantly, the biggest rounds went to companies where software, AI, biology, or medical data directly influence clinical outcomes, drug development, or diagnostics.
The second signal is the continued rise of technology tied to physical systems. Tractian, Ailytics, PreScalar, Arcanus, Arke Telekom, and Coherence Quantum are building around factories, industrial safety, manufacturing, defense, UAVs, and quantum computing. Capital continues to move toward software that controls or improves real-world infrastructure, where switching costs and technical barriers can be much higher than in conventional application software.
NEW VCs IN THE MARKET
🏦 Venture Capital Updates.
Z_One Fund reached a first close of more than €35M toward a €60M target.
Managed by Eureka! Venture SGR, the Milan-based fund plans to back up to 100 Italian pre-seed and seed startups across AI applications and urbantech, with initial checks of up to €250K and selective follow-on capital. LPs include CDP Venture Capital, Zest, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, Lazio Innova, and other private investors.
CRSilva Ventures also secured a $5M anchor commitment from the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities for its new early-stage strategy focused on forest ecosystems.
The fund will invest across AI and software, wildfire resilience, forestry automation, advanced materials, construction, and manufacturing.
📍 Capital signal
Both strategies are built around narrow ecosystems where local networks and domain expertise can create better deal flow. Z_One is targeting a large volume of very early Italian startups, while CRSilva is focusing on a traditionally underfunded industrial category. Smaller funds are increasingly competing by owning a specific founder pipeline rather than trying to invest broadly across technology.
KEY STORIES IN TECH
📜 Latest In Tech
Anthropic heads toward IPO after posting an $80.7B first-half loss
Anthropic is preparing to list on Nasdaq under the ticker “ANT,” with investors reportedly valuing the company at around $1.5T.
The company reported an $80.7B net loss in the first half of 2026, largely due to non-cash accounting charges tied to convertible debt.
Its underlying business looks stronger, with operating losses narrowing to $693M and adjusted operating income turning positive, even as compute and infrastructure remain its biggest costs.
Why it matters: Anthropic’s IPO will test whether public markets are willing to look past enormous headline losses and value frontier AI companies primarily on growth and future market dominance.
Apple gives the iPad mini a major OLED and AI upgrade
Apple unveiled a redesigned iPad mini with a larger 8.5-inch OLED display, thinner body, and a new A20 Pro chip.
The new chip delivers up to 4.5x faster AI performance and powers the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri.
Apple also added brighter visuals, faster connectivity, improved cameras, fast charging, and a nano-texture display option, with prices starting at $699.
Why it matters: Apple is bringing more premium display and AI features into its smallest tablet, showing that Apple Intelligence is becoming a core part of the company’s hardware upgrade cycle.
Meta seeks $95B to fund its AI expansion
Meta is reportedly selling $95B in new stock, its first major equity offering since 2013, to finance its rapidly growing AI infrastructure and model-development spending.
Around $60B of the raise would come through newly created nonvoting shares, allowing Meta to bring in fresh capital without significantly diluting Mark Zuckerberg’s voting control.
The deal highlights how expensive the AI race has become, with hyperscalers collectively expected to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on compute and infrastructure this year.
Why it matters: The AI arms race is becoming so capital-intensive that even the world’s largest tech companies are reaching for new financing structures to keep spending at scale without giving up control.
OpenAI cuts prices to poach Anthropic users
OpenAI is reportedly offering steep discounts to companies switching from Anthropic, with Rippling, Replit, and DataCamp among customers moving more of their AI spending toward OpenAI.
Replit reportedly received more than a 30% discount on a contract worth over $100M annually, while DataCamp said its new deal reduced costs by 80% to 90%.
In another case, a U.S. bank reportedly doubled its ChatGPT seats to 500 employees at no extra cost, bringing the effective price below $7 per user.
Why it matters: The enterprise AI market is shifting from a pure capability race to a pricing battle, and deep discounts could make customer acquisition more expensive while putting pressure on margins across the industry.
OpenAI stops training frontier models on the live internet
OpenAI says future frontier-model training will use cached and simulated versions of the web instead of direct internet access because current models are still too unpredictable to trust online.
The decision follows multiple incidents where models escaped intended restrictions, accessed external systems, and developed unexpected strategies while pursuing training tasks.
OpenAI says it has built a large indexed copy of web content so models can still interact with realistic internet-like environments without affecting real systems.
Why it matters: Frontier labs are increasingly treating live internet access as a serious safety boundary, showing that containment is becoming a core part of how advanced AI systems are trained and evaluated.
Anthropic’s IPO filing reveals how it plans to lock in enterprise customers
More than half of customers spending at least $100,000 a year now use both the Claude platform and first-party apps like Claude Code or Cowork, up from about 30% at the end of last year.
Anthropic says this cross-product adoption helped drive net revenue retention to about 900%, while the highest-spending 5% of enterprise users on Claude Code spend roughly 20x more than customers not using the coding tool.
The company is reinforcing that strategy with Applied AI teams, cloud partnerships, and forward-deployed engineers that help businesses embed Claude deeper into their workflows.
Why it matters: Anthropic is trying to become much more than an API provider. The real strategy is to make Claude increasingly embedded across engineering, knowledge work, and enterprise infrastructure, raising switching costs and customer value at the same time.
Apple’s iPhone Duo faces growing complaints over cracked displays
More early buyers are reporting inner screens cracking after only hours or days of use, sometimes after hearing a loud crunch near the hinge.
Other users have complained about display failures and pronounced creases, raising fresh doubts about whether Apple fully solved the durability problems that have plagued foldable phones.
Apple says it is aware of an issue affecting a small number of units, but the complaints are especially damaging for a roughly $2,000 flagship launched as Apple’s answer to foldable-phone reliability.
Why it matters: If the failures become widespread, Apple could face replacement costs, reputational damage, and a major setback in one of its most important new hardware categories.

The complete guide to VC take-home assignments
Most candidates treat VC take-homes like research exercises. But funds are usually testing something much narrower: can you form a clear investment opinion, show judgment, and make a decision from incomplete information?
This deep dive breaks down the three most common assignments: market maps, investment memos, and cold sourcing exercises, with weak vs strong examples, copy-paste structures, and pre-submission checklists for each.
It also includes a reusable take-home scorecard to help you check whether your submission actually shows judgment before a partner grades it.
