📍 Funding Signal
Physical-world technology is pulling in much larger checks.
Re Manufacturing, Bedrock Robotics, Foundry Robotics, Firehawk Defense, and Rendezvous Robotics show capital concentrating around manufacturing, autonomy, defense, and space. These markets are expensive to build in, but once companies prove technical viability, the barriers to entry can be far stronger than in conventional software.
The other shift is financing flexibility. Ibis secured a $250M credit facility before disclosing its equity round, while Easol combined equity and debt. For capital-intensive businesses, access to debt and structured financing is increasingly becoming a competitive advantage.
NEW VCs IN THE MARKET
🏦 Venture Capital Updates.
$10.4B closes across growth, industrial tech, and deep tech funds
Disruptive raised a $10B fund backed by family offices, international corporations, hedge funds, and some of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds.
AP Ventures closed its third fund at $300M to back seed and Series A companies across hydrogen, carbon capture, circularity, advanced recycling, and other technologies serving hard-to-decarbonize industries.
Begin Capital launched a $100M second fund for pre-seed through Series A deep tech startups, with a focus on AI infrastructure, hardware, silicon, and physical AI. The firm plans to invest globally, with an emphasis on European founders.
📍 Capital signal
The biggest takeaway is the widening gap between mega-funds and specialist early-stage vehicles. Disruptive is operating at enormous scale, while AP Ventures and Begin Capital are concentrating on technically difficult sectors where domain expertise matters more than broad market coverage. LP capital is increasingly flowing to either scale or specialization, with less room for undifferentiated strategies in between.
KEY STORIES IN TECH
📜 Latest In Tech
Apple finally launches a touchscreen MacBook Pro

Apple introduced new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with a full touchscreen, nearly a decade after experimenting with the Touch Bar and years of publicly resisting touch-enabled Macs.
The new machines feature a PROLED XDR display, M5 Pro or M5 Max chips, up to 128GB of unified memory, up to 16TB of storage, and a reinforced hinge designed to stay stable during touch input.
Prices start at $2,899 for the 14-inch model and $3,399 for the 16-inch, with preorders opening October 30 and availability starting November 6.
Why it matters: This is a major shift in Apple’s Mac strategy, signaling that touch is becoming part of the core Mac experience rather than something reserved for iPad.
Microsoft reveals Azure generated $33.2B in quarterly revenue
Azure brought in $33.2B during the July to September quarter, up 48% year over year and ahead of analyst expectations.
The business now accounts for roughly 36% of Microsoft’s $92.3B quarterly revenue, making Azure its largest and fastest-growing product line.
The disclosure also makes direct comparisons easier, with Google Cloud reporting $30.7B for the same quarter while growing at a faster rate.
Why it matters: Microsoft is giving investors a clearer look at the economics of its cloud and AI infrastructure business just as competition with AWS and Google Cloud intensifies.
Google takes ads inside AI Search global
Google is expanding ads in AI Mode and AI Overviews internationally, while also introducing multi-turn ads that can appear inside conversational search experiences.
The push comes as Search ad revenue growth slowed to 12%, even though Alphabet reported $127.6B in quarterly revenue and said overall Search queries are growing rapidly.
Google says early AI Mode ads are seeing click-through rates comparable to organic listings, while AI searches are becoming longer, more personalized, and increasingly multimodal.
Why it matters: Google is beginning to prove that AI Search can become an advertising business of its own, an important step toward protecting its core revenue model as search behavior shifts toward AI-generated answers.
Microsoft made $10B from OpenAI in a single quarter
Microsoft generated $10B in quarterly revenue from its commercial arrangements with OpenAI, equal to nearly 11% of its total $92.3B revenue for the period.
OpenAI-related revenue reached $24.1B for Microsoft’s full 2026 fiscal year, while outstanding receivables from OpenAI climbed to $7.2B by the end of September.
The companies are becoming more competitive, but their financial ties remain deep through revenue sharing, Azure spending commitments, and Microsoft’s roughly 24% ownership stake.
Why it matters: OpenAI is no longer just a strategic investment for Microsoft. It has become a major revenue engine, making their relationship unusually complex as they simultaneously act as partners, investors, suppliers, and competitors.
DeepSeek and Moonshot used GPT-6 Astra to train their latest models
DeepSeek and Moonshot AI reportedly relied heavily on outputs from OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra to improve their newest models, including Kimi K3.1 Pro and DeepSeek V4.1-Flash 1017.
The technique, known as distillation, allows developers to reproduce advanced model capabilities more cheaply by learning from a stronger model’s outputs rather than training entirely from scratch.
OpenAI has previously linked part of a coordinated distillation campaign to individuals associated with Moonshot, while Anthropic and other labs are rolling out stronger defenses against similar attacks.
Why it matters: Frontier AI capability may be spreading faster than model developers can contain it, making distillation a central battleground in the competition between U.S. and Chinese AI labs.
DOJ scrutinizes Nvidia’s $12.9B Hugging Face deal
The U.S. Justice Department is examining whether Nvidia’s planned acquisition of Hugging Face could reduce competition by giving the chip giant control over one of AI’s most important model distribution platforms.
The inquiry is part of a broader investigation into Nvidia’s acquisitions, investments, sales practices, and whether it has used its dominant chip position to pressure customers or expand into adjacent markets.
Regulators are also looking at earlier Nvidia deals involving SchedMD, Groq, and Run:ai as they assess how much influence the company is accumulating across AI infrastructure.
Why it matters: Nvidia’s dominance is expanding beyond chips into software, platforms, and distribution, and the Hugging Face deal could become a major test of how aggressively regulators challenge that growing control.
Samsung warns AI chip shortages could deepen in 2027
Samsung says AI-driven memory demand is likely to outstrip industry supply even more sharply next year as infrastructure spending across the AI ecosystem reaches record levels.
The company’s quarterly operating profit jumped nearly 9x to about $80B, with its semiconductor division contributing almost all of that profit after a 15x year-over-year surge.
Samsung plans to raise chip capex by 62% to 76.8 trillion won this year and increase spending sharply again next year to expand supply.
Why it matters: The AI boom is still creating extraordinary profits for memory makers, but persistent shortages could keep chip prices elevated and push hardware costs higher across data centers, smartphones, and PCs.

📍 Tips to Break Into VC
How do VC firms really evaluate you after the interview?
Most candidates focus on the questions they’ll be asked. But the bigger question is what happens after you leave the room. At many funds, interviewers score candidates across a handful of dimensions like judgment, sourcing, network, sector depth, and team fit, then write a short recommendation that can shape the final decision.
This deep dive breaks down the scorecard, the 1-to-4 grading scale, the difference between a “good” interview and a strong-hire interview, and the three comments that repeatedly show up in no-hire notes.
It also explains what actually happens in the internal hiring sync, how to give an interviewer a reason to champion you, and includes a self-scoring template you can use after every VC interview.
