KEY STORIES IN TECH
📜 Latest in tech
OpenAI is building five new Stargate data centers with Oracle and SoftBank:
OpenAI will construct five new AI data centers in the U.S. with Oracle and SoftBank, boosting Stargate’s planned capacity to seven gigawatts, enough to power 5M+ homes.
Oracle is developing sites in Shackelford County (TX), Doña Ana County (NM), and a Midwest location, while SoftBank is building in Lordstown (OH) and Milam County (TX).
The expansion follows Nvidia’s planned $100B investment in OpenAI, underscoring its push to scale infrastructure for training and deploying more powerful AI models.
AI-generated “workslop” is destroying productivity:
Harvard Business Review has defined “workslop” as AI-generated office content that appears polished but lacks substance, shifting the burden of correcting the task to the person who receives it.
A recent survey reveals that 40 percent of U.S. workers received workslop last month, reporting an average of nearly two hours of lost time to fix each low-quality AI output.
The phenomenon creates an invisible cost of $186 per employee each month, and half of workers say they view colleagues who send them workslop as less capable and reliable.
Google Photos users on Android can now edit their photos by talking to or texting the AI:
Google Photos now lets Android users edit images with natural language via voice or text, powered by Gemini AI, expanding beyond Pixel 10 devices.
Users can ask the AI to adjust lighting, remove objects, restore old photos, or even add creative AI elements, with follow-up requests supported for fine-tuning.
The update also brings C2PA Content Credentials support to Android, marking when images were AI-created or edited.
After India, OpenAI launches its affordable ChatGPT Go plan in Indonesia:
OpenAI introduced its ChatGPT Go plan in Indonesia at Rp75,000 ($4.50) per month, following its India rollout last month.
The mid-tier plan offers 10x higher usage limits than the free version, image generation, file uploads, and better conversation memory, according to ChatGPT head Nick Turley.
The launch intensifies competition with Google, which recently debuted its AI Plus plan in Indonesia featuring Gemini 2.5 Pro, creative tools, NotebookLM, and 200GB of cloud storage.
Tesla’s robotaxi test had three crashes on day one:
Tesla’s robotaxi test in Austin experienced three separate crashes on its first day of operation, July 1, after the automaker had logged a mere 7,000 total miles in testing.
Two of the crashes involved another car rear-ending a Model Y, while the third saw a Tesla with a safety operator on board collide with a stationary object, causing a minor injury.
By contrast, Waymo’s crash rate is more than two orders of magnitude lower, with just 60 crashes logged over 50 million miles of driving; that company has now logged 96 million miles.
Alibaba launches Qwen3-Max AI model with more than 1 trillion parameters:
Alibaba unveiled its most powerful AI model yet, Qwen3-Max, boasting over 1 trillion parameters and advanced capabilities in code generation and autonomous agents.
The model reportedly outperformed rivals like Anthropic’s Claude and DeepSeek-V3.1 in benchmarks, highlighting China’s intensifying AI race.
Alibaba is backing its AI push with a $53.4B investment in infrastructure over three years, alongside new products like Qwen3-Omni for immersive AR/VR applications.

US intel officials “concerned” China will soon master reusable launch:
A US Space Force intelligence official expressed concern that China mastering reusable lift would let them place more capability on orbit at a much quicker cadence than is currently possible.
The United States’ key advantage over China is SpaceX’s success in recycling rocket parts, which includes 500 successful landings of its Falcon 9 first stage booster to date.
Without a reusable rocket, China requires 14 different types of launchers to achieve a launch rate that is less than half of what the US accomplishes, mostly using the Falcon 9.
