KEY STORIES IN TECH
📜 Latest in tech
Anthropic cuts off OpenAI’s access to its Claude models:
Anthropic revoked OpenAI’s access to its Claude AI models after discovering usage that violated its terms, including using Claude to aid GPT-5 development.
OpenAI claimed its usage was industry standard and noted that its own API remains available to Anthropic, despite the cutoff.
Anthropic will still allow OpenAI access for benchmarking and safety testing, but has signaled broader reluctance to support rival AI firms.
Windsurf founders and VCs made big money from Google deal — but employees left out:
Google paid $2.4B to license Windsurf’s tech and hire top talent, splitting $1.2B between investors and $1.2B in compensation for ~40 employees — mostly co-founders Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen.
Greenoaks made ~7.7x return; Kleiner Perkins earned 3x. But ~200 employees not hired by Google received no payout, causing controversy across Silicon Valley.
Windsurf’s leftover entity was later sold to Cognition for ~$250M, allowing remaining employees to finally benefit financially from a second acquisition.
Apple forms new team to build AI answer engine:
Apple has created a new internal team, reportedly called Answers, Knowledge, and Information, to build a ChatGPT-style AI answer engine.
The engine could be a standalone app or integrated into Siri, Safari, and other Apple services, offering web-based responses to user questions.
Apple is hiring search algorithm experts and may have to revise its Google search partnership following recent antitrust developments.
Reddit plans to unify search as it aims to rival traditional search engines:
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced plans to make Reddit a go-to search destination by unifying its core search with the Reddit Answers AI product.
The updated experience will feature a more prominent search box and a redesigned app interface to prioritize search as the primary entry point.
With over 70M weekly search users and 6M using Reddit Answers, the company is betting on user-generated content and chat-style queries to compete with Google and AI search tools.
Manus AI launches a 100-agent swarm for research:
Manus AI's new "Wide Research" feature gives users a personal supercomputing cluster, deploying a swarm of over 100 agents to work in parallel on a single large-scale research task.
Unlike systems with specialized roles, each subagent is a general-purpose Manus instance running on its own virtual machine, enabling flexible agent-to-agent collaboration on a variety of complex problems.
The feature is experimental and lacks performance benchmarks to prove its advantages, while Manus has already faced regulatory bans in two US states over its core autonomous operation principles.
Mistral in talks to raise $1B at $10B valuation:
French AI startup Mistral is in discussions with VC firms and Abu Dhabi’s MGX to raise $1 billion at a $10 billion valuation, according to the Financial Times.
The funds would support the commercial rollout of its Le Chat chatbot and further development of its large language models.
Mistral previously raised €600 million at a €5.8 billion valuation and counts Nvidia, Andreessen Horowitz, and Lightspeed among its backers.

Tesla to pay $243M in fatal Autopilot crash:
A Florida jury ordered Tesla to pay $243 million in punitive and compensatory damages after finding the company one-third liable for a fatal 2019 crash involving its Autopilot software.
The Model S, with Autopilot activated, sped through an intersection and hit a parked SUV because the system failed to brake, leading to the death of a 22-year-old college student.
This case marks the first time a lawsuit concerning Tesla's autonomous systems has reached a trial verdict, as the automaker previously settled similar claims out of court to avoid proceedings.
